Honour. Generosity. Legacy.

In the sacred tapestry of the Islamic calendar, few days hold as much spiritual depth and emotional weight as the 10th of Muharram – Aashura. As the first month of the Hijri calendar opens its doors, it gently ushers us into a space of reflection, gratitude, and divine opportunity. Aashura isn’t just about fasting — it’s about embodying generosity, compassion, and trust in Allah’s promise of barakah.

“The best of people are those who are most beneficial to others.”

— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (al-Muʻjam al-Awsaṭ 5787)

In this post, we explore the beloved actions one should take on the 10th of Muharram, rooted in Hadith, infused with barakah, and aligned with the ethos of a heart-centered life.

A Day of Expiation & Divine Mercy

“Fasting the day of Aashura, I hope, will expiate for the sins of the previous year.”

— Sahih Muslim

While fasting is widely known as the primary Sunnah of this day, the beauty of Islam lies in its holistic mercy. Aashura is also a day of giving, of family bonding, and elevating our hearts through generosity.

Actions to Take on the 10th of Muharram

1. Spend Generously on Family

“Whoever is generous to his family on the day of Aashura, Allah will be generous to him throughout the year.”

— al-Bayhaqi, Shu’ab al-Eemaan 3515

How to Apply This:

Prepare a special meal for your loved ones.

Gift your spouse or children something thoughtful, no matter how small.

Pay for your parents’ groceries or treat them to a meal.

Share your time — in presence, not just presents.

2. Be Generous to Others

True barakah is found in giving to those who can never repay us. On this blessed day:

Donate to a water well project in a drought-stricken area.

Give sadaqah secretly — let no hand know what the other gives.

Visit the sick, give your time and a heartfelt dua.

Feed a fasting person

Give to an orphan

Smile sincerely at someone today

3. Make Du’aa with Intention

This is the day Allah saved Musa (عليه السلام) and his people. It’s a day of divine intervention and answered prayers.

“Then We inspired to Moses, ‘Strike with your staff the sea,’ and it parted…”

— Surah Ash-Shu’ara, 26:63

Du’a Suggestions:

Seek forgiveness and gratitude.

Ask Allah to grant you sincerity, barakah in your rizq, and protection from fitnah.

Write your du’aa in a journal.

4. Reconnect With Allah Through Fasting

Fasting is the crown of Aashura. The Prophet ﷺ fasted this day even before the obligation of Ramadan and encouraged others to do so.

Sunnah Tip: Pair the fast of the 10th with the 9th (Tasoo’a) or 11th to distinguish from the fasting of the Jews (Sahih Muslim 1134).

5. Reflect, Journal, & Re-Align

The new year of the Hijri calendar calls for fresh intentions.

Reflection Prompts:

What am I seeking from Allah this year?

How can I improve my relationship with family?

Who needs my generosity today?

My Thoughts

There’s something exquisitely beautiful about Aashura — a soft invitation to reconnect with the mercy of Allah through fasting, family, and generosity. As we navigate the year ahead, let this sacred day be our spiritual anchor — tethered in faith, surrounded by love, and wrapped in barakah.
