السلام عليكم و رحمةالله و بركاته
Recently a friend and I had decided that we needed to have a day out to catch up on everything going on in our lives.
At first I suggested that we go to Nizamiye Masjid in Midrand for Zuhr Salaah and then to a restaurant for lunch…
Things didn’t quite go that way because we ended up having a punctured tyre on the highway and needed to rethink our day.
So hello impromptu picnic!
We were near to Fordsburg but to be honest, ordinary restaurant food just wasn’t gonna cut it for us.
Being the adventurous foodie I am.. I had recently heard of a Palestinian restaurant and takeaway on the corner of Hanover and 9th Avenue called King Arabic Sandwich.
They have quite a selection of Arabic food, breads and desserts.
Their story is an amazing one, and if you visit their shop, these humble people will willingly share it.
My friend and I ordered falafel, and I bought some hummus to take home, which was lovely. I definitely plan on going back for dessert, especially the Umm Ali.
The second place we went to was to Istanbul restaurant.
Although we ordered just the kebaab, we got a lot more in return.
While waiting, we were served hot apple tea.
On receiving the order, I was stunned to see that we had flatbread, rice, salad, and the kebaab as well as raita.
We then went to the Zoo Lake in Jhb and sat down, caught up on what was going on with each other, and snacked on this delicious spread.
There was so much food unexpectedly, that we didn’t even manage to finish half of it!
As we sipped our ice teas, we reflected on our surprising day out.
I can definitely see myself doing this more often with my friends.
For now, my goal is to try a different food from King Arabic Sandwich each time I’m in the vicinity of their restaurant. ( I don’t go to Fordsburg that often.. Maybe once every 3 months or so.. Maybe longer).
And why not support these lovely people while getting a taste of Palestine, considering that many of us may not be able to visit there in our lifetime, at least we’ll be blessed with meeting someone from that blessed land?
Attached are two photos of published articles of these wonderful people. If you’re able to, have a read and let me know if you’ve had a taste of this delightful cuisine.
PS: for spicy food lovers, you might find the food from these places a little bland, but for those who like food relatively mild, it’s perfect.
(Yes I love hot, spicy food, but I am very adaptable as far food goes 😉)
Looking forward to your comments.
و عليكم السلام و رحمةالله و بركاته.
