Salaam and hi everyone
As we all know, the Islamic month of Ramadhaan is here. For those who do not know about or understand this month, I’ll give a quick explanation.
Ramadhaan, in Arabic: رمضان , is the 9th month of the Islamic Calendar, and it is the month in which Muslims all around the world fast. Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and Ramadhaan is the month in which the Holy Qur’aan was revealed to Prophet Muhammed (May God Be Pleased With Him).
The month is spent by Muslims fasting during the daylight hours from dawn to sunset.
By fasting, we mean that we begin our day by reciting the niyaah or intention for fasting and abstain from eating, drinking and sexual intercourse from dawn to dusk.
Sounds tough right?
For the most part, at first it is but then by Allah’s Grace and Mercy it becomes easier. The lesson to be learned from fasting is to learn appreciation, self control and to experience the hunger that the poor feel when they cannot afford to buy food.
This is the month in which we try to better ourselves and pray more, read the Qur’aan more, give more in charity, and spend time with our families.
This month holds meritorious blessings for us as Muslims.
On a lighter side, we do look forward to Iftaar, the time at sunset when we break our fast.
Traditionally we have kheer or almond milk, dates, steaming hot samoosas, cocktail pies, and a main meal.
Please note: after fasting all day, the first thing we do is reach for a thirst quenching drink! Food comes after that, and having stayed hungry all day, a person can’t really eat much.. So we tend to snack instead.
To all my Muslim brothers and sisters, I wish you a prosperous and blessed, fruitful Ramadhaan. Remember all of the Muslims undergoing trials and tribulations in your prayers, especially the ones in Abu Ghuraib and Guantanamo Bay prisons, Palestine, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Yemen, Syria etc.
May Allah shower us all with His Mercy & Blessings and accept all our dua’s during this Mubarak month. May He guide us, protect us and forgive us, insha Allah (God willing).
