September: The month of support for Deaf Awareness and Disability

The month of September is known as Deaf Awareness Month. The 2nd is Casual Day in South Africa which is in support of the Disabled.

Not many of us really consider or even really pay attention to the plights of people suffering with disabilities or from being deaf or even dumb or blind for that matter. That is until we are physically brought into contact with perhaps a family member or friend who has become disabled in someway or another.

To show your support for this month, make sure you buy a Casual Day sticker, which only costs R10.00, and dress up casually on the 2nd of September 2011!

In Lenasia, the MC Kharbai School have a theme selected which is ‘Rock Stars’. Its bound to bring quite a fun aspect to dressing up!

Also on the 2nd of September 2011, the Sunflower Fund Golf Day takes place at the Wanderers Golf Club.
Its being held in benefit to those with Leukaemia.
All funds raised are used to pay for donors wishing to join the South African Bone Marrow Registry but who are unable to afford the cost of the test.

Fund Raising Events May/June 2011

Salaam and hi to everyone

In this week’s update there are some lunches and dinners being held for fund raising purposes and they are all for a good cause.

This Saturday, 28th May 2011, is the LMA Dinner for Ladies. Tickets cost around R250.00 per person.

There is also a lunch being hosted by the Al-Hudaar Foundation. It will be held on the 5th of June 2011. Their tickets are R200 per person.
This fund raising function is to raise enough funds in order for the foundation to build an Islamic School for the orphans that they care for.

I appeal to all people, that if you are able to help out by buying tickets and attending these events, it would be really appreciated. After all, they are all for worthy causes and you can see that the funds raised are being put to good use.

Winter Blues…?

Salaam and hello to everyone

So winter’s begun, and there’s nothing better than a crackling fire in the fireplace to warm up the house, and perhaps a pot of chunky soup with crusty bread to warm up the tummy!

Its that time of the year where we get out our jackets and jerseys, scarves, gloves, caps and shawls, and of course our boots. Its a great time for shopping too ;-)

Its also that time year where I’d rather be cuddling under the blankets and watching movies or reading a book, instead of getting up and going to work!

However there are a few events taking place and for those of us who would like to go out, perhaps you’d consider going to one of these events. I’ll be listing them weekly so keep checking back to be updated.

There’s the march against the ban of the Niqaab in France on the 20th May 2011 as mentioned in my previous post.

On the 22nd May 2011, Ask Nanima is hosting a Home Industry Expo at the Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia. Lots of fun for the kids, shopping for the ladies, fishing for the men and food for all!

Also, they’ll be collecting kitchen appliances, toys and clothes for various charities/hospitals/ orphanages! So if you have anything to donate please take it along.

If you’re into books, a great book has just been released by Shubnum Khan, a local author, which is called Onion Tears*.
