Rooibos, the Afrikaans name for ‘Redbush’, is a plant that grows only in South Africa, particularly in the Western Cape.
A tea, made from dried leaves of this plant, has been used for decades by indigenous locals.
Rooibos became an alternative to ‘black tea’, which is popular in the UK, Europe and other countries.
It is prepared in the same manner as ‘ black tea’, by steeping the leaves in hot water. One can then add milk and sugar to it, or honey and perhaps a slice of lemon.
Having grown up in South Africa, my mom used Rooibos tea for an upset stomach and to quench her thirst, especially during the hot summers.
Today, we have a wonderful company named Carmien Tea, which carries on the tradition of hand harvesting the Rooibos tea, located on the foothills of the Cedarberg Mountains, in the Western Cape.

I learned about Carmien Tea, a little over a year ago, and I must admit that I’ve come to love this brand of Rooibos tea.
Their innovative use of blending the Rooibos with herbs, fruits and spices, have impressed me, and I have been surprised not once, but twice, by their generosity.
Having been gifted with their teas, as a birthday surprise, two years in a row, I must admit that having been a staunch coffee drinker for years only, I have come to love the flavours of their teas.
It’s definitely not the mundane, bland cup of tea I remember of my childhood, but a flavorful concoction with which I could do so much more with now.
Carmien Tea is innovative in that they offer tea pairings with food, as well as with chocolate, which has impressed me. As a brand, they are definitely worth watching as they continue to grow.
I love that they use recycled materials in their gifting, especially for birthday cards, designed by the employees’ children in their care at the preschool and kindergarten. Have a look below.
